Today, with the rapid development of innovative technologies and the introduction of artificial intelligence, it is difficult to imagine a successful enterprise or organisation that does not use modern information technologies as a guarantee of effective business management.
Taking into account the relevant trends, on 25 August 2010, the Department of Computer Disciplines was established on the basis of the Department of Higher Mathematics, Computer Technology and Information Systems at the Bukovina State Financial Academy, which was later renamed the Department of Computer Science. After the reorganisation of the Bukovina State Financial and Economic University in 2016, the department became a structural unit of the Computer Technology Department of the Institute of Physical, Technical and Computer Sciences of Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University.
During its existence, the department was headed by G.V. Prokhorov, Ph.D. in Physics and Mathematics, M.L. Kovalchuk, Ph.D. in Physics and Mathematics, A.V. Nikitin, Ph.D. in Physics and Mathematics, I.V. Stetsenko, Doctor of Technical Sciences, and A.A. Ascheulov, Doctor of Technical Sciences. In September 2016, Yuriy Oleksandrovych Uschenko, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor, was elected head of the department.
Since its foundation and up to the present day, the department has attracted the experience of renowned specialists in the field of information technology, both domestic and foreign. The unique experience of the department’s team has been and continues to be passed on by Professors Serhii Golub and Volodymyr Yasinskyi and their students, as well as Professor Robert Hiromoto from the University of Idaho (USA). The department invites foreign lecturers to provide students with relevant and interesting information. For example, courses on blockchain technologies and project management for success were taught by our compatriots who have been working abroad for a long time in well-known companies.
Currently, training of specialists is provided by highly qualified scientific and teaching staff who successfully combine their teaching activities with scientific work and are included in national and international scientific rankings, including five doctors and twelve candidates of sciences, among whom are three practitioners working in IT companies.
Since its inception, the department has been training bachelors in the field of study 6.050101 ‘Computer Science’. Subsequently, the speciality 7(8).05010105 ‘Computer Ecological and Economic Monitoring’ was licensed, and the training of specialists and masters began. Since 2016, the department has been training bachelors, specialists and masters in the speciality 122 – Computer Science and Information Technology in the newest specialisation – Intelligent Data Analysis in Computer Information Systems. This specialisation belongs to the field of Data Science and concerns the most advanced IT technologies in the field of artificial intelligence.
Specialists in this field are in high demand in today’s information technology and services market. The development and design of intelligent information, expert and decision support systems, the resolution of problems associated with the implementation of information technologies in production conditions, the development of business process models, and the formulation of business requirements for the software being developed are all tasks that are performed by such specialists.
One of the new areas of activity of the department is the training of computer systems analysts. The work of an analyst is aimed at finding new principles for organising enterprises and implementing more effective business process management systems, as well as creating and using applied intelligent information systems in various fields, such as economics, finance, ecology, insurance, and others.
The educational process is supported by teaching materials, e-learning tools, and computer equipment. Classes are held in modern computer labs equipped with wired and Wi-Fi Internet access. Elements of informal and dual education and project-based learning are being actively implemented thanks to an educational grant from SoftServe, which was won by our lecturer, assistant Valentina Dvorzhak, with her discipline ‘IT Project Management’. Close cooperation with the International Association of Modern Education and Computer Sciences (RAMECS) led to the opening of a representative office of MECS Press, which publishes 10 professionally oriented journals, some of which are included in Scopus.
The Department of Computer Science is the centre of the Joseph Schumpeter Bukovina Innovation Technology Cluster (Chernivtsi IT Cluster, BIT Cluster Association), whose director in 2019 was elected as the head of the department, Prof. Y. O. Uschenko. The training of specialists is carried out with the close support of IT companies in the region and Ukraine: SoftServe, EPAM, Agiliway, OSF Digital, E-logic, Yukon, AMC Bridge and others. After completing an internship at the above-mentioned organisations, the best students have the opportunity to be employed by them.
