STUDENT CONFERENCE OF CHNU
Materials from the student scientific conference:
Every year in April and May, Chernivtsi National University named after Yuri Fedkovych hosts an annual Student Scientific Conference. At faculty and institute section meetings, students present their scientific achievements in the following thematic areas:
- Biological and chemical sciences
- Economics
- Foreign languages
- Historical sciences
- Physical, technical and computer sciences
- Architecture, construction and decorative and applied arts
- Pedagogical sciences
- Mathematics and computer science
- Physical Culture and Human Health
- Philological Sciences
- Philosophical and Theological Sciences
- Legal Sciences
Traditionally, the best student reports are then presented at the final meeting, which takes place in a mixed format approximately in May in the Red Hall of the university.
Rules and example of abstract formatting for a student conference
The text of the article should be written in Ukrainian or English (for participants from abroad), no longer than 2 full pages (A5, 148*210 mm2) (but not in A4 format in two columns) with all margins equal to 2.0 cm.
Text density: 36-40 lines per page (single spacing on a computer).
Font size: 11 pt, captions for figures, tables, bibliography – 10 pt.
Font: Times New Roman.
Paragraph: 5 mm indent (use hyphenation).
Printed text size: ~110×160 mm.
The author’s name is indicated in the upper right corner of the first page in bold font, size 12 (full name, then surname). Below is the position (assistant, associate professor, professor, assistant professor), surname and initials of the scientific supervisor.
The title of the article should be in the middle of the page in bold font, size 12. The list of references (if necessary) should be provided at the end of the article in size 10 font.
When referring to the text in square brackets, indicate the number of the item in the list of references. References are formatted in accordance with DSTU 8302:2015. Footnotes are not permitted.
A student can only be the author of one report!

OLYMPICS
The International Collegiate Programming Contest (commonly abbreviated as ACM/ICPC or simply ICPC) is the largest collegiate team programming competition.
The competition is held between teams of three students. Students from higher education institutions and first-year postgraduate students are eligible to participate.
The Olympiad tour takes place as follows: each team is given one computer and eight to twelve tasks, the conditions of which are written in English. The competition lasts five hours. Teams write solutions in the programming languages C, C++, Java, Python or Kotlin. If the program gives an incorrect answer or does not meet the time or memory constraints, the team receives a notification. A task is considered solved if the program gives correct answers to all tests. Unlike other Olympiads, partial solutions are not taken into account.
The team that solves the most problems wins. If several teams solve the same number of problems, their places are determined by penalty time.

SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH COMPETITIONS
All-Ukrainian competition of student research papers in various fields of knowledge and specialities
The aim of the competition is to train a new generation of European-level specialists, equipping them with the knowledge and skills of research activity, for whom the pursuit of professional excellence is a priority strategy in their lives.
The main objectives of the competition are:
- identifying and developing gifted students, helping them realise their potential;
- encouraging creative self-improvement among students;
- promoting achievements in science, technology and innovative technologies;
- involving leading scientists, researchers and academic staff in creative work with gifted young people..
1. Students submit their own research papers in various fields of knowledge and specialisations (majors) to the competition. Research papers must be original in nature and must not have received awards from the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, government agencies, or other competitions.
2. A single research paper may have no more than two authors, provided that they have shared materials related to the topic of the research paper and a single research supervisor. If the authors of the research paper are students from different higher education institutions, there may be two research supervisors from different higher education institutions.
3. Scientific works of students that are a thematic continuation of works submitted to the Competition in previous years are considered provided that they contain no more than 25% of scientific material from the previous work.
4. Scientific papers shall be written in Ukrainian.
In agreement with the Organising Committee, a competition may be held in fields of knowledge, specialities (specialisations) in foreign languages. Scientific papers for such a competition shall be submitted in the relevant languages.
5. In scientific works submitted to the Competition, including copies of patents, scientific articles, etc., the surnames, initials of the author(s) and scientific supervisor, and the name of the higher education institution shall be replaced by a code (the code shall consist of no more than two words).
6. Scientific works submitted to the Competition in violation of the requirements of this section shall not be admitted to the Competition and shall be removed from consideration by decision of the competition commissions (industry competition commissions).
International competition of student research papers “Black Sea Science”
The aim of the event is to expand international relations, stimulate students’ scientific work as the most important factor in training specialists, and encourage students to participate in international scientific programmes, projects, design and other forms of scientific research. The competition is held in the following areas:
- food science and technology;
- economics and management;
- information technology, automation and robotics;
- energy and energy efficiency;
- ecology and environmental protection;
- tourism and hotel and restaurant business.
Requirements for participants
Authors of scientific papers must register in Ukrainian or English at the link.
If there are 2 or 3 authors, only the first author fills out the registration form. Upon registration, the author receives a link to their email address, which must be used to download a ZIP archive containing:
– the paper in Word text document format;
– information about the authors in Word format;
– signed information about the authors in the form of a scanned document.
All files must be in one archive. External documents (copies of authors’ publications, patents, etc.) will not be considered in the competition.
Requirements for participants:
– Persons who, at the end of the second stage of the competition, are students of higher education degrees ‘Junior Specialist’, ‘Junior Bachelor’, “Bachelor” or ‘Master’ may participate in the competition;
– Each work may have no more than three authors and two supervisors.
– Members of the organising committee and jury may not be scientific supervisors of works submitted to the competition.
– Participation in the competition is free of charge.
Requirements for the paper:
– The paper must be written in English.
– The paper should be up to 15 pages long (A4 page size, 20 mm margins on each side).
– Appendices (if any) are included in the total length of the paper. It is not permitted to include external documents (copies of authors’ publications, patents, etc.) in the appendices.
– The text should be printed in Times New Roman font, size 14, line spacing 1.0, paragraph indentation 1.25. The text of tables and the list of references should be printed in Times New Roman, size 12, line spacing 1.0. The title of the work should be printed in bold capital letters. The titles of sections should be printed in bold capital letters with single spacing.
– The work should be formatted according to the template.
Requirements for information about authors:
– Information about authors and scientific supervisor should be formatted separately (template) and sent as two files: a Word text document and a scanned document with signatures.
If a scientific paper is submitted in violation of the requirements of this section, it shall be returned to the author for revision within five days. The paper shall not be accepted for revision again and shall not be admitted to the competition.
The winners of the first stage of the competition will receive invitations to participate in the second stage of the competition no later than two weeks before the date of the competition. In the second stage of the competition, the finalists will defend their work before the jury, commenting on their presentations and answering questions.
Presentation requirements:
– Presentations must be delivered in English.
– Presentations must include illustrative material (drawings, diagrams, charts, photographs, graphic images, etc.).
– Presentations must not exceed 15 minutes in length.
SCIENTIFIC LIBRARY OF CHNU
The library was founded in 1852 as the Regional Library, the first public library in Bukovina, and since 1875 (the year Chernivtsi University was founded) it has been a university library. The library’s total collection numbers over 2.6 million items. Among them are 1,125,000 copies of scientific literature, 171,000 textbooks and teaching aids, 648,000 copies of magazines, and 96,000 copies of fiction. The collection of foreign publications includes 376 thousand works in German, Romanian, English, Latin, Polish, Ancient Greek, French, Hebrew, Yiddish and other languages. The collection of rare and valuable publications contains about 70,000 copies: incunabula, paleotypes, domestic and foreign old prints, personal archives of V. Simovich, professor at Lviv University, E. Kozak, professor at Chernivtsi University, K. Raifenkuhel, director of the Chernivtsi University Library, and collections belonging to Tomashchuk, the first rector of Chernivtsi University, V. Simovich, E. Kozak, I. Karbulitsky, I. Spivak, and others. The most valuable book dates back to the 13th century. It is written in Latin on parchment. This collection also includes books belonging to Marie Louise, wife of Napoleon I, Emperor Franz Joseph I, university professors S. Smal-Stotsky, Ion Sbiera, and others.
The scientific library has alphabetical, systematic, and service catalogues, as well as alphabetical and systematic catalogues of foreign publications, bibliographic card indexes – the main reference index, local history index, card index of works by teachers and researchers at Chernivtsi National University, etc. An electronic catalogue is currently being developed.
Every year, the structural units of the scientific library and its branches at the faculties serve an average of 37,000 visitors. Recently, the annual book circulation has been about 500,000 copies. The scientific library exchanges books with libraries in 24 countries around the world, including Moldova, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Romania, Poland, Austria, the United States, England, Canada, China, Thailand, etc., as well as with many university libraries in Ukraine.
